A photo by day for 28 days. Photography contest | 1st week

in #adsactly5 years ago (edited)
In february of last year I participated for the first time in the photography contest: #UnaFotoxDíax28días. During the 28 days of February at 8:00 p.m. we would be given a photo-assignment through the Instagram account @RMTF. After selecting a photograph, it had to be published in the personal IG of each participant, so we would have a period of 28 hours until the night of the next day to complete the activity. The objective of the competition was to develop a visual discourse for a whole month. I want to share part of the experience.

I took the challenge as an opportunity to improve my photography skills and try to make new pictures every day. During this first week I had to look for a concept. The initial idea that I had was to go out ready to capture the moments of my daily routine and the people that I see on the streets of my town (San Cristóbal, Venezuela). With this idea in mind I went after the first photos.

1. Un pie de atleta. / An athlete's foot.

The first theme they gave us was "An Athlete's Foot", each participant had to give an interpretation. With this photograph I started the challenge, I took it in the Metropolitan Park of San Cristóbal to a group of veteran runners. That day I tried many photos, I even spoke with several people to photograph them. This park turned out to be the right place for the image I was looking for.

2. Un depredador considerado. / A considerate predator.

The second day the theme was "A considered predator". Taking this picture was quite a coincidence. That's something I like about street photography, sometimes its all about being in the right place at the right moment.

3. Una prueba gratis de 30 días. / A 30 day free trial.

The angle for this photograph was key, the subject was "A 30-day free trial." Finding an interpretation through the street images was a challenge, the scene was presented when some workers took their lunch break, I was very attentive looking for the best moment to take the photo and that was the result.

4. Una portada para un disco de Camilo Sesto. / A cover for a Camilo Sesto's album.

Each time the daily assignment became more complicated, this one was hard to get. First, I did not know anything about Camilo Sesto, so did a quick research and decided to ask people in the street about him. I visited several of my grandparents' neighbors and while we listened to songs by Camilo Sesto, I took this shot.

5. Un réprobo. / A reprobate.

This is one of my favorite photos of the whole competition, the theme was "A Reprobate", person who, according to the Catholic religion, is condemned to the pains of hell. This topic was crazy! It lent itself to make very interesting images, I could interpret topics such as evil, ignorance and prejudice. But in such a short time I had to pay attention to all scenarios. This photograph was not planned, I took it in a bus and I think it mixes all the subjects I was looking for, especially prejudice. The protagonists are intimidating; the tattoo, the lenses, the shadows and the framing all worked to materialize the theme of the day.

6. Una anestesia local. / A local anesthesia.

So, I really wanted to capture photos from my day-to-day walks in the city. The "Divino Redentor" Church became the perfect setting for the theme of the day: "A local anesthesia" I went in search of images that conveyed the tranquility and devotion that faith offers, since for many this is the best anesthesia in difficult times. Finding the temple full of people showed me that this feeling has remained intact in the hearts of the Tachirenses folks.

7. Un día D. / A D day.

The research was a fundamental part of doing this challenge, many times I had to educate myself on a topic to get the most accurate image. "A D day ", was the seventh day assignment and referred to a term used by the military to indicate the time at which an attack or combat operation should be initiated. Getting an image for this topic was complicated, I spent the whole day with my camera touring the city until I finally found this scene; two girls playing chess on the sidewalk during a power outage.

FIRST WEEK
BENQLH500 Camera | All images are my own.
This first week's experience was quite practical and spontaneous since I was looking for the concept that I would give to the project while taking the pictures simultaneously. During this process street photography became the genre that inspired me to do the series, I focused on capturing the daily scenes of my city, San Cristóbal, because I thought they had a cultural and visual richness that needed to be portrayed. All the photographs are vertical in a format of 1080 x 1350 pixels, which in my opinion was the best way to take advantage of the instagram posts. These, for now, would be the initial guidelines that I set and this was the result of the first seven days.

Thanks for reading and good vibes!
