With this article, @sccf wants to change your mindset and move you to embrace teamwork and community effort over the "I can do it alone" attitude. While it is entirely possible to achieve great feats alone, life and history have always proven that teamwork excels beyond what we can achieve as individuals.
We will look at 3 inventions that changed the world. While we can point to many inventions attributed to individual effort, we want to see that almost all inventions and innovations involved some effort from others and that the acclaimed works of most geniuses actually involved others. Take a look.
Notable inventions that involved collaboration
:::::::: 1. The Wright Brothers made us fly. ::::::::
Travelling by air has become a routine for some people. Each time we get on a plane, we seem to think more about our destination - and most times about our safety. We rarely recall who gave us this invaluable ability to take to the skies; the Wright brothers. While much credit is given to the Wright brothers for the developing a machine capable of flying, they benefited from the work of other people. For example, an Engineer by name Otto Lilienthal used "fixed wing" designs made by George Cayley to create real gliders with fixed wings. Lilienthal tested his designs and gathered lots of data which was used by the Wright brothers to improve their work. Of course, they also used internal combustion engines which was another invention of that time to power their craft. Lots of people actually made modern flight a reality.
:::::::: 2. Henry Ford and the first car. ::::::::
At a time when travelling by horse was the most honorable way to go, ford made the first car which people clamored to buy. It was the Ford T-model released in 1908. The world never imagined it could get a more comfortable means of transportation other than the horse. Big thanks to Ford. But wait a minute, it seems everyone had been taught Ford made the first car, but we are rarely told he didnt create everything. Ford used the internal combustion engine made by Carl Benz earlier in 1885 to power his car. Ford made innovations in the production process with his assembly line that significantly made cars affordable for the ordinary person. So again, Ford benefited from someone else's work to make the first car.
:::::::: 3. We search Online to find everything - thanks to Larry Page and Sergey Brin. ::::::::
How often do you go online to find information? Very often - likely. Thanks to the collaborative work don by Larry Page and Sergey Brin. They started the tech giant we now call Google. It was an experiment to see how search algorithms works. Today, we now see how everything works once we search it on Google. Again, two people worked together to invent something that we all are (likely) proud of.
:::::::: 3. Our conclusion. ::::::::
We do not dispute the fact that many inventions were done by one person. We realize that individual brilliance can lead to awesome creations. However, as seen by the 3 examples above and numerous others, great results come when people work together and collaborate. Community activity or collaboration between people of same mind almost always leads to collective success. When we leverage on other people's abilities and ideas, we are able to improve our self and grow together.
