I've had plenty of therapists who were absolute garbage and chatgpt is better than 90% of them in my opinion. do i think it can replace therapy, no, of course not, but if you live somewhere where good mental health services are unavailable it is far superior to nothing for the price. while a therapist is ideally working to never see their client again, I've had more than a majority simply collect their weekly check and not be any more helpful than google. one of them gave me a tony robbins cd once and was like "this is all you need."
Therapy is not accessible for everyone. And I think we all want connection in some kind of way (I mean we are all here because we want to talk to others about a hobby).
It feels like a double-edged sword to use an AI for therapy or friendship. It might feel real or even help some, but is never the real deal
like, a while ago I came across someone in a reddit post say that they dont get along with humans, AI is their only friend. They then went on and said edgelord-y things, got criticized, and left with an "see, nobody likes me". Which is just sad? and just strengthens their belief that it is the fault of all the others, when criticism is already seen as "they dislike me"
