It’s the middle of the night. Stacy’s eyes open to the vibrating motion of her body. Her mattress is wet from the sweat emanating from her body almost like a running tap water. Her temperature is high – higher than it was the previous night before she went to bed. She feels a striking headache that’s threatening to pull her head out of her body. Her thoughts fly in different directions as she tries to get a hold of herself and make sense of the crisis she’s experiencing.
This isn’t the reaction she expected after taking the malaria drug she bought at the pharmacy the night before. On her way back from work, she started feeling a headache. “This must be malaria,” she thought. She stopped by the pharmacy, and grabbed her favorite antimalarial drug Artemef. It always does the magic for her.
Her condition is getting worse. She feels a tingling sensation down her vagina like she wants to urinate. Before she could do anything, her mattress has become wetter from her urine. “Oh my God what’s happening to me!” she screams, visibly terrified. The last time she bed-wetted was 25 years ago when she was a toddler.
She begins to feel numbness in her head like it’s growing bigger. Now, it’s clear to her that she needs the attention of a doctor. But first, she needs help. She lives alone in a 2-bedroom apartment. The help she seeks is far away. She can feel death calling.
She manages to pull herself up from the bed. Her shaky legs aren’t strong enough. She falls to the ground, hitting her head against the aluminium table. She lays on the ground unconscious, blood flowing from her broken head. She wishes she could turn back the hands of time. If only she had gone straight to the hospital, or at least, consulted a medical personnel about the headache she was feeling, this wouldn’t have happened. “Please Lord help me. If I survive this, I’ll never indulge in self-medication again,” she prays in her heart.
