It doesn't always have to be new - used aluminium rims in good condition are a real bargain. However, there are a few things to consider before buying.
The price advantage
Beautiful aluminium rims not only shape the appearance of the car, they can also be decisive for the sales price. Good rims are usually very expensive, so you should consider buying well maintained used rims. The used rims can be found in good condition at both dealers and private sellers. Especially in summer the time of the aluminum rims starts, who wants to save money should try to buy the aluminum rims during the winter season. In contrast to steel rims, the price difference for single wheels is no longer as great as it used to be. However, the price is noticeable for multi-part aluminium rims, which are often used in the tuning scene.
Purchase through a dealer
More and more tyre dealers and garages are offering to buy aluminium rims from them. They are usually a little more expensive than a private dealer, but the old rims are removed from the vehicle. In addition, you will receive a warranty if you buy from a garage or tyre dealer. If the used rims are defective, he must also take them back in an emergency. The condition of the rims and the price can be determined much more easily by a local dealer. The rims are often exposed in the shop under good lighting conditions and even the tiniest scratches are noticeable. Buying used rims over the internet is strongly discouraged, because you have to rely on the seller's description. Even photos are not very informative, as it depends on the conditions under which they were taken and whether they really show all the damage.
Attention in case of damage
Slight scratches from a wrong car wash or parking are completely normal. These can usually also be removed with special polishes, so that the rims look like new. Serious damage caused by kerbstone edges, i. e. small cracks, can only be done by replacing expensive rims. Alloy rims always look nice, but they are not meant for winter use in harsh conditions, as they can easily be damaged. Surface damage caused by road salt cannot be repaired. If rims should be damaged only slightly, we recommend not to buy them, as it is difficult to estimate the damage and repair.
