The Thoroughbred Center is a training center for derby horses. It is located in Fayette County, Kentucky, which is located outside Lexington’s city limits. It was built in 1969 as a Thoroughbred training and sales facility and covered an area of 133 acres of the prime central Kentucky farmland. It was originally known as the Kentucky Horse Center. KHC was a very popular alternative to training at the local racetracks.

This KHC had a 5/8-mile track with a metal roof, a lounge, a full-service bar, two barns made of concrete with metal roofs, and a pavilion with 920 seats. The barns could house up to 260 horses and had 40 tack rooms as well. In mid-1970s KHC was sold to Joseph Johnson III that added more acres to this facility. Six additional barns were added, and a larger one-mile training track was constructed at the Thoroughbred. The current training track has a sand, silt, clay surface which is suited for training purposes. In 1984 this Thoroughbred was purchased by Spendthrift Farm. During this ownership period, 9 additional barns were constructed, and older ones were renovated. The entire main building was also renovated. In April 2000 Keeneland, Lexington’s local racecourse purchased this facility, and its name was changed to The Thoroughbred Center from KHC. The facility was further expanded and can now hold up to 1,180 horses at one time. Currently, works are in progress to make Thoroughbred training facility the most popular in the country.

This training center also provides multiple farm and estate services like snow removal, mowing and lawn care services, stall floor installation, barn repair, and painting, etc. Authentic Kentucky Fencing materials are also sold at this center. These materials can be bought at the farm from Monday to Friday from 8 am to 4 pm. The training center can also be booked for multiple events like weddings, reunions, parties, etc. across the years.

Visitors can take guided tours at the Thoroughbred training facility. The tours happen once per day and last about 90 minutes. The tours happen from Monday to Saturday from 1st April to 31st October and from Monday to Friday from 1st November to 31st April. Pre-booking is recommended for these tours. The tour fee for adults is $15 per head, and for children, the fee is $18 per head. If your tour group is more than 20 heads, then the fee is $10 per person.
