Early this morning the city removed the blockades and attempted to remove the memorial.
Activists soon arrived on scene to re-establish barriers. Then I arrived to speak with one of the barrier enforcers.
She opened up about the need to keep the square until their list of 24 demands are met and that the intersection has been a place of hope and healing.
Anthijuan Beeks Sr. was less enthusiastic about this one-year-old occupation, stating the need to come together to find a solution in the face of high crime and businesses going away.
All the while, people gave impassioned speeches about the need to stand strong and not back down to the city's efforts to open up these streets.
It's a saga of crucial social issues and indicative of the polarizing, malfunctioning, and sometimes counter-intuitive America we know today.
And I'm capturing it all for a short documentary looking back on "A Year at George Floyd Square".
