Kangaroo Paws - the flowers jump out at you.

in #anigozanthus6 years ago (edited)

Kangaroo Paw is the common name for the Anigozanthus, which is native to Western Australia, It has unique flowers that come in many colours, the flowers emerge from sword-shaped leaves. The plant grows to around 50cm high, and the flower stalks grow up to 1 metre high. Plant your Kangaroo Paws in well drained soil in the full sun. It is suitable for cool-temperate to warm climates. There are many colours available, and some of the modern hybrids are spectacular, one having black and green flowers. Many varieties are Ink spot resistant - ink spot is a disease that turns parts of the leaves black. I photographed this plant in a harbourside reserve.New5 009.JPG

The Kangaroo Paw

Anigozanthos

The kangaroo paw is endemic to the south-west of Western Australia. It is a wonderful demonstration of the beauty of nature. I took particular interest and fascination in the kangaroo paw thanks to its brilliant colours and exciting name.

Anigozanthos ‘Amber Velvet’

Their vibrant, almost iridescent flower colours are combined with a beautifully furry texture created by the hairs that cover the stems and flowers—and provide the latter’s colour. Another oddity is the way the colour varies according to temperature, with cooler days producing more intense shades.

Anigozanthos ‘Red & Green’

Anigozanthos 'Pink Joey'

The amount of light intensity can also affect the flowers…. plants grown with some shading can have different colour intensity to ones grown in full sunshine. Thus the same species in bloom can look completely different in different environments.

This new and exciting plant collection provides a real taste of the unusual – but anyone can grow them – you do not even need a garden!‘Kangaroo Paws’ or ‘Anigozanthos’, (to give them their botanic name) are natives of Southern Australia, but grow superbly here in the UK, delivering immense, bright colour to your summer patio displays. The name arises because the flower shape has the look of the foot and claws of a Kangaroo foot! Our collection includes the very latest and best varieties following extensive plant breeding work – they have been bred to give more flower stems, brighter colours and to perform brilliantly in your patio pots and planters. Your collection contains one each of Inferno (red), Pearl (pink) and Tenacity (orange yellow) supplied for instant impact and in flower! Supplied well established in 10.5cm pots.Plant them in a sun drenched spot and they will reward you with more blooms than ever – in fact the brighter the sun, the more intense the flower colour becomes! They repeat flower all summer and then flush with blooms the rest of the year if kept frost free. If grown indoors as a houseplant they will flower on and off all year long! They will happily thrive in the UK climate and flower all summer, and although hardy to approx. -3C, they will benefit from overwintering in a frost free place to guarantee they are overwintered

This remarkable group of Australian plants typifies what is unique about many of our native plants. They have vibrant, almost iridescent flower colours combined with an amazing, furry texture provided by the hairs that cover the flowers and stems (and incidentally provide the colour for the blooms).

Kangaroo paws also typify the frustrations of growing many of our native plants in that many varieties can be rather unreliable in cultivation. In spite of all that, kangaroo paws are now well established as garden plants, particularly the many named hybrids that have been released over the last 25 years.

There are some good reasons why some gardeners are unsuccessful with kangaroo paws and a lot of the blame lies with the lack of choice in the market place.

https://gardendrum.com/2015/06/27/how-to-choose-and-grow-kangaroo-paws/

This whimsical plant gets its common name from its woolly, tubular flowers, which open to look like a kangaroo’s curved fingers. Although they’ve become a common site in California gardens, kangaroo paws are native to southwestern Australia. There they grow wild in sunny areas that get winter rain, and can be seen growing along roadsides. They’re pollinated by birds and small nectar-feeding possums. As a bird (or possum) feeds on the nectar deep inside a flower, pollen rubs off the anthers and onto its head. As the bird flits from flower to flower, it distributes pollen onto the stigmas of other flowers while picking up more pollen.

Oh yeah @ctrl-alt-nwo, this iconic Aussie plant is loved for its stunning flowers which attract birds and also make great cut flowers.

In a nutshell kangaroo paws come from regions which experience cool wet winters and warm dry summers. If you can replicate this then your plants will thrive. If your climate is different to this then try the taller varieties as they are more adaptable. Alternatively grow the smaller types in pots and view them as short-lived perennials. With this in mind you can get happily grow them in cool, temperate and subtropical climates around Australia.

As mentioned above kangaroo paws aren’t sensitive to phosphorus (except the black kangaroo paw) so you can use regular fertilisers on them. Fertilise when the plants are actively growing with a slow release organic fertiliser, compost or aged manure. Potted specimens will especially benefit from regular doses of eco-aminogro to support their flower production. Use eco-seaweed as well to encourage thicker cell walls which makes it harder for fungal diseases to take hold.

Snails and slugs may attack fresh growth but the biggest problem comes from fungal diseases. These appear when the growing conditions aren’t ideal or when the plant is losing vigour at the end of its life. Crown and root rots, kangaroo paw rust and ink spot are the major culprits. Remove affected leaves and improve growing conditions (eg more sun, better drainage and air flow). Some commercial growers incorporate eco-fungicide into their spray program as well. In a home garden situation keep plants vigorous and healthy with regular applications of eco-seaweed and eco-aminogro as your first line of defence.

Kangaroo Paws are truly one of Australia’s most iconic plants; the flower features as the floral emblem of West Australia and has even appeared on a number of stamp issues.

Kangaroo Paws originate from the south west of Western Australia and of the 12 species 11 are from the Anigozanthos genus.

The 12th is particularly distinctive. It comes from the Macropidia genus and is known as the Black Kangaroo Paw because of its black and green flowers.

The vibrant flower colours and unusual paw-like flower head (that gives them their name) have made Kangaroo Paws immensely popular garden plants across Australia and around the world.

Kangaroo Paw flowers are highly distinctive with their finger-like projections and the cover of fine velvet hairs that give the flowers their colour.

In the wild the flower colours range from red and green through various shades of reds and yellows to the black and green of the Macropidia fuliginosa.

Kangaroo Paws do best in slightly acidic soils with good drainage and full sun exposure. They do not like wet feet but they will cope with a range of soils if there is good structure in the soil. Very high phosphorous levels may also be detrimental to some Kangaroo Paw species.

Most Kangaroo Paws will die back and become dormant over winter. You should take advantage of this characteristic to cut back most of the leaves and old flower stems to ground level (see pruning section).

Beautiful flowers, my friend and Kangaroo Paws prefer an open sunny position with sandy soil or a sandy soil with plenty of organic matter added to create a sandy loam. The more humid the environment the more important it is to have good drainage. They should be given plenty of water when flowering but otherwise they are fairly hardy.

Before the flower has died completely cut it at the base of the stem. This may encourage another flowering. When it has completely finished flowering cut the stem and leaves down to the ground and let it regenerate the following year.

Kangaroo Paws can be propagated from seed by placing in a seed-raising mix, keeping it covered and spraying it to keep the soil moist until germination which may take up to a month. Then transfer it to a pot with an Australian Native potting mix.

You can also divide the clump if they are getting very large by lifting them with a fork and cutting using a knife or the blade of a spade. The best time to divide the clump is early summer or autumn when the weather is not too harsh. Cut all of the leaves back by a third and place in a well drained Australian Native potting mix in a sheltered position. When you see some new growth in the leaves and roots it is ready to plant in the garden. Beware that if you have a hybrid it may be sterile. Thank you @ctrl-alt-nwo

It has various colours which attracks anybody. Really pleased to know about the beautiful Australian plants. Thanks a lot sir @ctrl-alt-nwo for always sharing some new Australian plants and flowers with us.

The colour and form of kangaroo paws make them one of the most rewarding Australian native plants for the home garden. Kangaroo paws are also very good cut flowers. They are exported to many parts of the globe and are grown commercially in the USA, Israel and Japan.
Kangaroo paws belong to the genus Anigozanthos, which has 11 species. The closely related Black Kangaroo Paw is called Macropidia fulginosa.

The size, flower-stalk height and colour of kangaroo paws flowers varies between the species. Many new forms have also arisen as the result of deliberate hybridisation. The overall colour of the flowers is influenced by fine coloured hairs which cover the flowers and, sometimes, part of the stalk. The flowers appear over spring and summer.

I love when there are still beautiful things in life (in this case nature) which will positively surprise me. I have never seen a flower like that. A very interesting plant, reminds me of a deer's antlers. I can be wrong ;)

Greetings and thanks for the inspirational post.

The inspiration is in the color of the sun. :)

A very interesting and beautiful plant. Anigosanthos, Anigozanthos Mangles, or Kangaroo paw, Kangaroo Pow (Anigozanthos manglesii) is a species of herbaceous perennial plants of the genus Anigosanthos of the Haemodoraceae family.
Perennial 30-120 cm tall and 40-60 cm wide with vertical, gray-green leaves, 10-40 cm long. Red-fleecy, rarely branchy stems bear brushes 5-14 cm long with 7 yellowish-green flowers, 6-10 cm long, with curved stems gradually becoming dark green. They are decorated with lemon-green villi from the outside at the base or red, sometimes yellow or apricot-yellow.
Since the anigosanth is beautiful and long stands cut, it is often used for bouquets. Thank you for sharing This is still an oin contribution to my collection of knowledge about plants :)

So busy with the garden and house!
I lost more than fifty plants and trees because of the flood! Watching the water level rising in the fields was quite painful!

These colourful flowers cheer me up!

Sounds like you are getting the rain we need here !

Too much rain this month! I wish I could send half the rain fall to Australia. Some provinces are inundated by flood water at the moment.

We have 100 percent drought here in NSW. Send it over !

Right! I'll send the monsoon through the worm hole via the shortest route!
Prepare your umbrella!

A very unusual plant, @ctrl-alt-nwo .

Anigozanthos is an evergreen perennial.
I read that in nature the length of the stems reaches as much as two meters.
The leaves are very original and collected in the basal rosette,
there are a variety of shades of green.

You have made a vivid photo.
Thanks.
Always introduce us to amazing and rare plants, @ctrl-alt - nwo

Recently watched an interesting video.

These flowers are quite rare, and in Russia almost never occur.

Kangaroo paws are naturally hardy plants, but they require some basic necessities for proper growth and flowering. Ensuring they are met will keep your plants healthy throughout the season.

Full Sun:

For brilliant and long-lasting blooms, place your kangaroo paw in an area with a lot of direct sunlight. In order for your plants to grow and flower properly, they need at least six hours of direct sun each day.
Remember, they can tolerate even the hottest and most intense sunlight.

Average Sandy Soil:

In the wild, the kangaroo paw plant grows in nutrient-poor and sandy soils. For container-grown plants, find an average organic potting soil and amend it with a few cups of regular play sand. This will simulate the plant's natural setting and also provide sufficient nutrition for the entire season.

I think these plants are very suitable for creating bouquets. The second, the popular name of Anigosanthus - "kangaroo paw", precisely describes the shape of the tender inflorescence. In cut form, flowering shoots can stand in the vase for about three weeks, and dried "kangaroo feet" persist for a long time, so floral souvenirs and Ikebans with Anigosanthus are very popular among tourists in Australia.
There are more than 12 species of this plant. Of these, only some are cultivated in indoor floriculture. These are the so-called "dwarf" Anigosanthos, reaching a height of not more than 60 cm. The plant does not like frequent transplants, therefore they are made only with the growth of the root system. And the Anigosanthos grow very slowly. Excessive soil fertilization is undesirable for them: they are fertilized only during the active vegetation period once a month, in the winter it is better to abstain from adding supplementary food. Thank you for the information.

Kangaroo Paw Plant Features
Kangaroo paw is an unusual and special warm-weather perennial that shows off interesting brightly colored, velvety flowers. The buds of this Australian native have an interesting shape and that's where the name kangaroo paw comes from. In addition to being beautiful, kangaroo paw is an excellent, long-lasting cut flower and also attracts butterflies and hummingbirds into the garden. The plant's fantastic heat tolerance makes it a top pick for containers on sunny decks and patios in the North.

Kangaroo paw has almost grassy leaves and tall stems of flowers, so it's ideal for mixing in with more traditional mounding perennials to add a splash of texture. In container gardens, kangaroo paw is an excellent "thriller" plant and takes on the role of being a focal point wherever it's planted.

Most varieties grow from 2-4 feet tall. It's hardy in zone 10, but is often grown as an annual in colder zones.
