Depends on what you read (& I read a lot of news). Some fearmongering, some downplaying & some realism. My latest try at the latter is here.
Overall, the news are fairly rational in tone, although many articles simply mention the "confirmed" numbers. & these confirmed numbers are simply the official Chinese numbers, hence totally unreliable. In some cases they at least include some more realistic estimates.
Here on Steemit, there are sadly too many conspiracy theories. Wouldn't be so bad if there were any actual evidence for any of these. But for some people, eg. the existence of a bio-weapons laboratory near Wuhan is enough to conclude that the virus must have come from there.
But I digress...

Back to the original question: Whether anything is actually fear-mongering or under-reporting will only be clear if we have a real outbreak outside of China. Only then will we have proper numbers to judge.
