Once he was out of the chrysalis as the adult butterflies, a butterfly has only a few weeks to live. Throughout this time, he will focus his energies for 2 things: eating and mating. Some of the smallest butterfly, blue, can only survive a few days. Butterflies that live long in the adult form, as monarchs or mourning cloaks, can live up to nine months.
