White Land Crab-1.jpg
Have you ever driven down a road on a tropical island at night and all of a sudden you hear what sounds like popping popcorn. Well I have. I immediately stopped the car, think that something terrible had happened and well it had.

I was in the middle of a Land Crab stampede! Land crabs inhabit most of the various tropical islands around the world and in some case are raise as a food source similar to chickens. This particular practice is very common on the less populated islands in the Bahamas. Which is were my encounter happened, I was staying on Long Island.

I was quite upset that we had not only run over a number of these animals but it happened without any warning. Our guide that we were traveling with said they must have escaped from a local farm and tried to make a run for it. He was laughing at the time while saying this and we should collect some of them and fry them up for dinner. We didn't we found the owner of the escapees and help round them up before heading on our way.

Chasing crabs with head lamps in the jungle is not only funny but hard as well.

In the end I learned a valuable lesson, when travelling learn about not only the local customs, but about the live stock as well.

Thanks for reading everyone and have a great Monday.

Scott
