AnimalPhotography - Snowshoe Hare in Edmonton

Snowshoe Hare Edmonton.jpg

We have a lot of rabbits in Edmonton or at least I thought we did. It turns out that what I always thought were rabbits were actually snowshoe hares.

For years there were a row of four greenhouses next to the house I live in. The greenhouses were old and two out of the three were completely overgrown. Kids would toss rocks in the air and smash the glass out on the roof of the greenhouse. The owners completely stopped maintaining the two end greenhouses and only opened the ones in the middle to sell bedding plants in the spring. Every year they were reducing the number of weeks they stayed open and you could tell their business was suffering.

Eventually they tore down the greenhouses and for a few years we had a big open lot next to our yard.

The hares loved it. The green grass was a source of food and gave them a place to hide. It gave me a chance to get some pictures like this one of a hare eating a dandelion.

The lot had recently been mowed. A few days before the lot was full of two to three foot grasses and weeds.
