LA JIRAFA, ESTA SUFRIENDO UNA EXTINCIÓN SILENCIOSA

En los últimos 30 años la población mundial de jirafas ha disminuido al punto de acercarse a la extinción. Un informe presentado por la Unión Internacional para la Conservación de la Naturaleza (IUCN) señaló que más del 40 por ciento de la población de jirafas ha disminuido debido a la caza furtiva y la pérdida de su hábitat.

Científicos aseguran que el número de jirafas ha caído estrepitosamente en solo 30 años, lo que ha sido denominado como una extinción silenciosa.

En el marco de la Conferencia de las partes del Convenio sobre Diversidad Biológica (COP13), expertos afirmaron que en 1999 existían alrededor de 140 mil jirafas, pero ahora hay menos de 80 mil.

Desde 1985, el número de jirafas bajó entre 36 y 40 por ciento, al pasar de unos 163 mil 452 especies a 97 mil 562 especies en 2015.

Esto no debe ocurrir

Según la IUCN existen otras causas de esta reducción en los ejemplares, entre ellos, el aumento de la población humana en sus hábitats, la caza ilegal, la exposición de la agricultura y la minería, el aumento del conflicto humano - vida silvestre y el malestar civil.
