Chile has officially enacted a ban on animal testing for cosmetic purposes.
With the introduction of law 21.646, this Latin American nation has taken a firm stand against the practice, joining an ever-growing number of countries that have implemented similar regulations.
Chile is now the 45th country in the world to take this step, alongside nations like India, New Zealand, and South Korea, with Europe leading the way.
The new law not only prohibits animal testing for cosmetic products and their ingredients but also bans the import and sale of products tested on animals, including guinea pigs.
This makes Chile a leader in South America and sets an example for the rest of the world.
Furthermore, the law marks significant progress in the field of scientific alternatives to animal testing. It encourages the use of substitute methods, such as synthetic human skin models, which have shown to be more effective and reliable in predicting human reactions.
Mauricio Hörmann, president of the Chilean Cosmetic Chamber of Commerce, commended the law, highlighting it as a reflection of society’s growing commitment to sustainability and ethical responsibility.
Each year, over 100 million animals are subjected to experiments worldwide. Initiatives like the one in Chile are crucial in combating the outdated and unscientific practice of vivisection, helping to steer the industry toward a more ethical, safe, and sustainable future.
