A smell is one of the most important senses for cats.
Apart from the smell, cat has also developed an olfactory organ called Jacobsn's organ, which is connected to the nasal and oral cavity. Flehmen process manifested by the fact that the cat has an open mouth, raised upper lip and sucks the air through the mouth.
The air gets on the mucous membrane, which makes smelling more intense.
It's easy - the cat can "taste" the smells.
Tomcats use this when detecting female sexual status. But all the cats do it.
And why are they doing it?
"Flehmeh" is one of the cat's ways of knowing everything about surroundings.
