Pileated Woodpecker

in #animals7 years ago

The pileated woodpecker or Dryocopus pileatus is quite a interesting bird. This one just happened to show up yesterday in my yard andI quick snapped some pics( I used my tablet so Iam sorry for the poor quality). This species of woodpecker is the 2nd largest in USA, with the ivory- billed woodpecker being the largest. Adults are 16 in to 19 in long and have a wing span of 26in to 30in long. Weight ranges from 8 to 14oz, with average being 11oz. Males have a red line from the bill to the throat in females these are black. Their drum sounds like someone hitting a tree with a large hammer and most likely would be 10 fast taps. Their call almost sounds like a jungle bird. Their diet consists mainly of insects they find in trees and stumps, hence the name . Well until next time Iam @provider and have a nice day!IMG_20170524_094408.jpgIMG_20170524_094510.jpgIMG_20170524_094427.jpg
