Rescatar animales es una tarea casi siempre que requiere tiempo completo, dedicación y responsabilidad. En Colombia, puntualmente en Bogotá se cree que hay cerca de un millón de perros y más de 300 000 gatos viviendo en las calles, existen muchas organizaciones que los acogen y ayudan, sin embargo no dan abasto.
Los rescatistas, son un grupo de personas que se dedica a ayudar a perros y gatos callejeros, los llevan a sus hogares, les brindan alimentación, abrigo, atención médica y posteriormente los dan en adopción.
Esta es una labor desinteresada, en la mayoría de casos quienes rescatan animales reciben poca o ninguna ayuda económica, en la mayoría de casos son otros rescatistas, animalistas o defensores de animales, quienes se solidarizan con esta ellos y realizan donaciones en especie o en dinero.
Esta labor se lleva a cabo desde el no recurso, y es abanderada principalmente por mujeres, sin embargo cada vez hay más hombres que se integran a la lucha, dejan los estereotipos de lado y se convencen de que ayudar a los animales necesitados no es una labor de mujeres sino una labor que nos compete como humanos.
La mayoría de animales callejeros fueron antes queridos en sus hogares, mientras eran cachorros, al crecer sus familias les abandonaron, otras razones para abandonarlos son el cambio de vivienda, viajes y vacaciones. Lastimosamente como sociedad aún nos falta mucha conciencia en cuanto a la responsabilidad que adquirimos al vivir con un animal de otra especie, ellos merecen los cuidados y la atención que recibe cualquier otro miembro de nuestra familia.
Rescatar animales genera un sentimiento de satisfacción incomparable, y la gratitud y fidelidad que obtienes de ellos es para toda la vida, eso si es amor del bueno! .
