I do not know how to put an avatar on steem. I tried to link my picture from Google Photos but my profile picture remained empty.
Looks like you have the wrong type of link for your avatar.

So you have copied a steemit post into the box instead of image url :p
The url needs to link directly to an image instead of a page that contains one. To do this you can right click an image and say copy image address to get such a link, although around the web some of these links are encrypted and will not work.. You can try it on one of my avatars to test it then change to something else after once you see what the correct format is like.
