I assumed the movie leaned heavily into juvenile humor — something on par with Borderlands 3. That assumption was way off.
There are maybe 3–4 crude moments total, most in the first act (e.g., two fart jokes in one scene, a guy peeing in drinking water, and a quick poop mention). That’s it — definitely not excessive.
The humor overall is hit or miss, but the real strength of this film is its scope. The story is epic, with solid twists and a massive-feeling world. The music stands out, and the 3D animation is top-tier — this is the blueprint for how anime can do dynamic 3D fight scenes right. So many great shots. The characters have depth and there are threads left intentionally unresolved that could lead to powerful moments in the 3rd film making the characters even better.
I think I got really turned off by the gross-out humor during my viewing but upped my score a bit because of some of these visuals.
I do think the dub VAs absolutely do a fantastic job in their performances, there is just a few characters where the synching of the English voices doesn’t match up with some of the movements on face— e.g the Ne Zha’s master.
