One of my favorites so far for this past year is Ajin! I really didn't like the animation style at first, but the story really caught my attention and I couldn't stop watching!

Really tough question, I think it depends on the theme you're looking for. Either way, if there's one that I'd ever recommend to anyone, that would be "Legend of the galactic heroes" ~
I haven't even heard of that one yet, Why do you like it?
Well, it's kinda like Star Wars, except that there's no fantasy, such as the force. There's a political struggle between the Empire and the Republic, and you can get to see the pros and cons of both of these views (while there's also an independent faction which favours the side they like the most, and also some religious fundamentalists in the middle). Because of it, it's really hard when it comes to pick a side, as you can get to understand the motivations of the characters who are fighting for their own ideals. The soundtrack is also awesome, I mean, I've seen many animes before, but this one was definitely a jewel ~
