This strange basketball court exists in Dubrovink in Croatia. First i was supprised...´Why did they build a basketball court into the historical city, netx to the city walls?´ The answer is only a few steps away.
There is a museum(Gornji Ugao Tower), which is not easy to find, in the first moment. But is is definitely a place to visit! It is a very interesting, modern museum with less tourism.
Years ago there was a court before. When there were construction workes, workers found historical relics.
Archeologist studied this area and found many relics of a smelting plant. So there was a problem. Some people didn´t want to close the excavation and some wanted to build a new court. The guide told us that there are less public courts in Dubrovnik, because there is very less free space. So they found a very good compromise.
They decided to build a raised floor. So unter the floor is the excavation of the historical smelting plant (the museum) and above is the basketball court.
That´s the reason why there is a basketball court in the middle of historical buildings. :)
