Apparently this was probably arson. I think it could have been prevented with a cheap security system but now it is a total loss with no insurance plus cleanup costs.

Your description wasn't to detailed. They bought it and made some money off it then tried to sell it because why if they were making money off it or did it become a bad investment over time and they tried to sell it and it got torched?
Flint built this golf course and abandoned it instead of selling it and making money off the sale and property taxes. Since it was Flint unsurprisingly they probably did a bad job of managing the golf course. It had been vacant for a few years until it finally was torched by an arsonist.
