Elmer Grubcock did say “Forsooth,”
“I have lost that vibrant bloom of youth!”
Things once regarded as quite risque’,
Now only seem to be stupidly risky.
“Once I possessed a wholesome yearning,”
“To be off, and at it, money earning,”
“Now I am content to sit,”
“Life’s armchair traveller, proud of it!”
“Adventure was, for me, like catnip!”
“Now I’d just as sooner let it slip.”
Trying is the first step to failure,
No Amazon adventure, prefer Australia.
Once I used to Scuba Dive,
And a sporty car I’d happily drive,
All superficial, to impress,
Peers in life, no second guess.
At five thousand feet I’d bail out,
From an aircraft, lustily shout!
Skydiving seemed the thing to do,
The manly thing one must pursue!
Now I hate the very thought of flying,
No, not because of the risk of dying,
But because, fashionable, it no longer is.
Bottled water only, no gin fiz!
The elegance has gone, all passengers are herded,
For much trouble and inconvenience, their loins must be girded!
Elmer Grubcock hopped in a car, and screamed aghast!
“Slow right down, you’re driving too fast!”
Nowadays Elmer desired a slower pace,
After all, travelling was not a race!
Far better to be a few minutes late,
Than “dead, on time,” an unsuitable fate!
