STREET ART #38 – Graffiti and street art in Copenhagen (Denmark)

When I was in Copenhagen earlier on this year, I came across many great paintings. Most of the murals I found are large and covers the entire wall of a building. In the district of Nørrebro there is also quite a large amount of graffiti. Some it is illegal, like the those done by Danish graffiti artist SPYO. More than any of the other areas of the city, Nørrebro's graffiti reflects the multi ethnic community which is what characterizes this area. Turkish bazars and Indian restaurants are found among bars, nightclubs and designer boutiques. Many students and artists are living here. This is the area, more than any other in Copenhagen, where you will see a burka dressed woman walk along side the young and hip student. A diverse community that is exciting to explore. The street art adds significant value to the different districts in Copenhagen. It has been used as a tool for the gentrification of poorer neighborhoods in the city.

This mural of a girl on a bicycle was done as early as in the 1990s, but still looks good I think.

Graffiti is omnipresent in Copenhagen. Some of it is «illegal» and very different from what will usually be defined as street art. This one is done by an artist who calls himself SPYO. A Danish graffiti artist and a self-proclaimed outsider. He has no desire for, or respect for the «established society». Besides larger pieces he also writes protests on rooftops and facades all over Copenhagen.

When I took the photo of this very large mural, I had to break up in pieces. Impossible to get the whole wall in one photo. Because I was here during spring the trees actually came in the way. But it is supposed to be a giant tanker. The whole painting is 900 square meters! The artist uses the surroundings as part of the whole picture. Like the chimney and the existing graffiti to make the whole picture complete. It was painted by the Danish artists Simon Hjermind Jensen.

The title is «The Great Escape» and done by Copenhagen street art collective, Copenhagen Cruise. It depicts a girl flying over the city with a handful of balloons in her hand. Again, the tree came in the way....

Large mural at the end of this block. All I managed to find out about the artist, is that his name is Kenny Scharf.

Another colorful mural done by Eske Kath with flowers and plants, which looks like a natural extension of the surroundings. Because the photo was taken in the end of April when plants are green, it blends in perfectly with the garden below.

On the main street, Nørrebrogade, which runs through the area I saw this one. The words in Danish means « We love Nørrebro». I don't know who did it, but must be someone living here!

At the «Red Square» by the main street. It represents the colorful and tough neighborhood of Nørrebro. It was created for the Mountain Dew, but the writing indicates the sentiments of the people of Nørrebro. The text means «We hate commercials».

I ended my tour here at the Red Square, but I am sure there are a lot more around this area. When walking around it is actually easy to overlook some of them. But I have seen a lot of wonderful art on my trip to Copenhagen this spring, in addition to historic buildings, good food, modern architecture etc.

Great article, @digi-me. These pieces are fantastic. So crazy and huge, wow!!! 😎

Thanks for sharing!

Thanks a lot :) Almost all of the paintings are huge, but the 900-square-meter tanker is absolutely exceptional! I even missed some paintings! It was only when I went back in the opposite direction I saw them! In Copenhagen you have to look both up and back at the same time!!

Crazy how huge those murals are. Interesting stuff. It must be a colorful one if all walls were painted artistically. It's also interesting that a mural done in the 90s still is present today.

Even they are so huge I did overlook some!! Have to keep looking up and turn around and look back! I was very surpriced too when it comes to that 90s still there. It still looks really good.

Thanks a lot :) Almost all of the paintings are huge, but the 900-square-meter tanker is absolutely exceptional! I have never seen any other mural as big as this one. Great to walk along the wall to see how it is built up. But you have to see it from a distance to really get an idea of the size of it!

I bet it's a whole different thing
seeing it "live", for sure...

Hard to get a good photo of it...It is so big!

The shots are good ;)
