In my life as an artist working with various tools and supplies, I have noticed the very importance of the right selection of these tools. Every drawing medium has it pros and cons, when used with understanding could bring outstanding results. To this end, I would be happy to share a few of my experiences with these media as a brief guide.
Note that a drawing could be done with same tool but with a different technique would change the result drastically. A simple cross hatching is totally different from scribbling. Tho using same tools the results has a different feel to them.
Working with dry media, I have noticed the following.
Graphite pencils:

This in my belief is the most widely used medium for art. It is easily affordable yet very important for every artist. I use it often for figure, portrait drawings and mostly for sketching. Storing them wisely prevents them from breaking easily.
They come in various degrees of hardness. As artists, B- grade pencils are for shading, they progressively become soft with the 4B softer than the 2B
In terms of use they are versatile and could give a large range of values. When used properly with appropriate technique results.
Charcoal pencils

Charcoal is perhaps the best medium for sketching. It simply very easy to control in application allowing the application of precise details and large tonal gradation. But when used I often advise beginners to use it broadly in the overall rendering of the form. This in my opinion is its greatest asset over other dry media. It provides a hands on experience, literally because it smudges easily with the use of a finger or a stump. Willow charcoal sticks are great for covering large areas but be careful not to over smudge. After the drawing is completed, it is wise to spray with a fixative to prevent smudging.
Pen and ink:

My favourite sketching tool is my pen. The ink itself could be applied with a brush or a pen depending on the results I have in mind. Most of the cool effects happen with the variation on the nibs of the pens used. Ballpoint pens, technical pens, felt pens and fountain pens each has their effects. Most of the tonal gradation would be gotten by cross hatching. A smooth surface paper strong enough to absorb the ink should be used. In my opinion, rough sketching shines in pen sketching.
Wet medium:

Painting is a very fun experience if you do not stress over it. Each painting medium has its own advantages and disadvantage. Though with practice you get used to them.
Acrylics are bright and vibrant and dries quickly.
Oil is well known for its blending ability but sacrifice by drying slowly and are quite expensive
Watercolor is a save haven in between and dries relative to water, could be reactivated and blended again.
Each medium also requires their surface which would hold the paints, that is also to be considered.
