Incredible sculptors who turned stone into silk

in #art5 years ago

Sculpture is one of the most sensual types of art. But sometimes the genius of teachers exceeds all expectations and that is when stone masterpieces are born that can be confused with something else.

Giovanni Strazza — "Virgen María", 1850

The sculpture of the Virgin Mary in veil was made in Carrara marble, in Rome, by the famous Italian sculptor Giovanni Strazza, in the mid-19th century. It is believed that the veiled woman is one of the symbols of Italy.

Raffaelle Monti — "The dream of Sorrows and the dream of joy", 1861

Rafael Monti presented his sculpture for the first time at an international exhibition in 1862 in London. Today this work is stored in the same city: in the Victoria and Alberto Museum.

Thomas Ridgeway Gould — "Viento del oeste", 1870

This sculpture of the American probably symbolizes the expansion of the United States to the west. Or maybe the explanation is simpler: just look at this woman's dress, it really seems that the west wind is blowing there.

Rafael Monti — "Sisters of Mercy", 1847

To create the fine veil of the stone you have to know how to choose the material well and, of course, be a true genius. Monti's veils seem to weigh nothing and are waiting for a light wind to undulate them.

Chauncey Bradley Ives — "Ondina emerging from the waters", 1880

Giovanni Maria Benzoni — "Evening cardigan", 1864

Giuseppe Sanmartino - "Cristo Velado", 1753
