Collaborative Art: "Id Drawing" (Part 1 of 4)

in #art8 years ago

Id (noun) the part of the mind in which innate instinctive impulses and primary processes are manifest.

Animation of the drawing in progress...

4 Artists on 1 Paper

This drawing is our first investigation into collaborative art. Beginning with a blank sheet of paper, the drawing incorporates an equal proportion of space via four artists. Using the methodology of an architect approaching an empty plot of land, we filled in an equal area of blank space, and once complete we rotated positions. The process was repeated 6 times around, as we developed an overall composition playing off of other's unique styles and ideas. As time went on, we found ourselves adjusting our individual narratives in order to cooperate with one another's creations.

Here is our first completed "Id drawing" below:
“Id Scale IV” is a 70cm x 70cm hand drawing made with pen and ink.

As the paper space is filled in and passed along, an interplay of new thoughts and concepts become realized. The grid-structure allows for borders between your own idea and the next participant, but it also provides the ability to connect and expand on a pre-existing theme. You have the ability to mediate or ignore, expand or contract, allowing the drawing to become a dynamic commentary on collaborative development. By the final turn, the Id becomes an elastic environment, uniquely fused with a sense of textural adaptation and spatial composition.

Here's a gif of the four of us rotating seats as we complete the 4 drawings.

Eric and Mike debate a composition in progress...

With this series we aimed to explore a balance between the ambitions of an individual, and the resonances of that individual’s idea within a broader context. Our drawings are structured mechanisms of working between the individual, the collective, and environment which we inhabit - a mediation between an internalized frame of mind, and an externalized frame of context.

This is Part 1 of 4! Stay tuned for the next drawing...

You guys should sell prints of these "collages" on Peerhub!

Hey Kevin! This is definitely a great idea. We've been getting requests for prints of some kind and we're planning on setting up some physical send-outs soon!

OH my gosh!! When I first saw you guys a few days ago, I was feeling a bit jealous that there are four of you dedicated to such awesomeness. There is so much that comes from collaboration in art--bringing up lots of internal ideas, thoughts, limitations and inspirations that seem to be amplified when working together. I just did a collaborative piece with @opheliafu which was rather quite simple as we both only worked on it for an exchange or two. I love that you just switch it up and switch it up and switch it up. I have also done pieces with many frequent changes, but not to the dedicated extent you are doing it. I love it! Makes me just want to jump through my computer and play with you. Here is a small piece I did with someone I met on my travels. Thanks for sharing. If you guys go to Steemfest, I want to play! Upvoting, following and resteeming you. Going to suggest you for the SteemPlus Daily Newspaper too.

Wow! This is absolutely fantastic, so sorry we didn't see this earlier!! We would LOVE to be at steemfest but can't swing it with different schedules / timing etc. But you're on for next year, have a blast in Amsterdam!

Doing it now!!!

Looks like a plan view of a future condominium complex. Other than that one should be a psychologist to figure out your individual motivations. Many great artists employed ghost artists on the same painting. But these collaborations have been conducted with the understanding that there was one main idea behind the painting and everyone worked towards accomplishing this idea. In your case guys, it's a combined talents dispersed in every which way – no common idea and as a result, it’s impossible to understand what this drawing is the expression of… Impossible for me.

Maybe it is an art of the new time, though. Future will tell.

Thank you for your insightful comments @mgaft1 ... We also see cities in these. The four of us treated them as collages of plan drawings. In future posts we'll dive into the ideas of "ego" in artwork. In this case, we tried our best to dissolve the individual and embrace a raw-reactionary drawing...

Ic. well I will follow you to see the next incarnations of your colloboration.

Thank you for the feedback, and yes it is definitely a departure from a straightforward "Ego" development with assistants and such. I think that's the true fun and challenge of presenting on Steemit as we provide explanation and insight into our own lives which are both relatively absent in a gallery/museum/online portfolio/etc. To try and clearly explain what is happening in the drawings is a challenge for us as well and the focus has been on when our techniques and ideas collide rather than converge seamlessly.

A beautifully composed post.

Thank you :) ! Stay tuned for part 2 tomorrow!

What fun! It's astonishing to see such a perfect blend of talent working together. Cheers to hitheryon.

Thank you for reading (looking) and for the kind words! :)

I love these. I'd be interested in a print of one of these too! :)

Awesome, we'll let you know when we have them available!

Yes please! Me too

Very cool!
Waiting for next parts :)

Thank you :) just posted round 2!

This is amazing! Never seen a collaboration on one art piece. It makes it beautifully unique with rich ideas coming from different minds.

I hope one day I get as good as one of you.

thanks
