ON GRAPHICS TABLETS

in #art6 years ago (edited)

WHAT IS THIS ABOUT
To make good art, one must be able to apply precision. The normal computer setup (the mouse), cannot achieve this easily and would still require expert hands and lots of time to be able to achieve satisfactory results.

THE POINT
All graphics artists at some point will want to spend less time on being able to get what he wants. Take an example, if you have a picture and want to trace it into the computer, using a mouse to trace those delicately detailed lines and curves would be a herculean task even for those seasoned in the art. To achieve this feat with ease, one would (should) get a tablet. This would enable the user trace those outlines with ease and with the least time spent on moving anchor points in order to make them conform to the picture as is.

TABLETS
Tablet have categories. There are three categories (if am correct)

TABLET COMPUTERS
Tabet computers include your iPad your galaxy tabs etc. These guys double entertainment devices (ie watch movies, check and send mails etc). They come with high quality screens and drawing applications and also with good sensitivity for drawing.
Some of the new Devices in this category include

  1. SAMSUNG GALAXY TAB A WITH S PEN

image

This device running on an android os comes with a stylus which registers 4096 levels of pressure sensitivity thus ensuring that you can sketch very accurate lines in a natural way without lag. There are also tons of free and paid drawing and sketch applications for the android operating system.

  1. APPLE IPAD PRO

image

The apple iPad pro doesn't come with the apple pencil (the pencil costs an estimated extra $99). With the pencil, the accuracy for drawings increase greatly. The price for this product though is something.

3 MICROSOFT SURFACE PRO 4

image

This is a tablet PC that comes with a stylus featuring 4096 levels of pressure sensitivity thus making this a great candidate in its category for drawing and sketch applications.

TABLET MONITORS
These tablets feature a display with touch sensitivity thus enabling the user using a stylus to draw and sketch directly on the display. These productss come in different sizes, pressure sensitivity levels and resolutions etc. Some products include

1 CINTIQ pro

image

These graphics tablet is produced by a leader in this category (wacom). It even features stylus tilt recognition with 8192 pressure sensitivity levels. The resolution is excellent
Wacom

2 PARBLO COAST10 10.1"

image

Parblo is one of the newest Wacom alternatives offering high-quality products.
This tablet spans 10.1” and comes with a bunch of accessories like an artist’s glove and an extended USB port.

Display quality is glorious and this is one of the cheaper tablets with a fully functional on-screen display. It doesn’t recognize finger taps but the pen can function as a mouse which makes it a versatile tablet for any occasion.

3 HUION KAMVAS GT-221 PRO

image

Another alternative for the wacoms. This tablet features a 21" display with antiglare and 8192 pressure sensitivity levels, this is a contender for the CINTIQ which features a lesser screen size but better resolution. This tablet costs less than the CINTIQ with near similar features

GRAPHICS TABLETS
this group is where it all started from. These products don't feature any displays. They feature a drawing area sensitive to the stylus and the results are shown on the screen. These are the native graphics tablets. Some include:

1 WACOM INTUOS DRAW

image

This is an entry level drawing tablet with 4 customizable buttons. The tablet features 1029 (some with 2048) levels of pressure sensitivity. This means those fine lines cannot be achieved

2 INTUOS PRO PAPER EDITION

image

The Intuos Pro Paper edition allows you to easily trace and vectorize your drawings. The 8,192 levels of pen pressure allow for high-resolution images and the tablet comes with wireless capability. Best of all? With this price ($500)point also comes a better drawing surface that feels like paper. One can buy a tablet monitor for less or a graphics tablet of similar features for less the than a $100.

3 HUION NEW 1060 PRO

image

For a very small amount ($79 precisely) you get 8192 pressure sensitivity levels and some other freebies. This tablet is definitely one to go for especially if you don't have the funds for those big boys. The price is totally comparable to the INTUOS DRAW but this product definitely packs more punch.

WHAT TO LOOKOUT FOR
No matter the category you are buying from, the things you definitely have to be on the lookout for include
1 PRESSURE SENSITIVITY(LEVELS)
This directly affects the response to the amount of pressure on the drawing surface form the stylus. The higher the number, the better

2 REPORT RATE
This takes into consideration the response time of the stylus to the surface. The higher the value, the better thus meaning that the user might see lags with less numbers and no lag with high values.

3 RESOLUTION
The resolution of tablets are measured in lines per inch. This means the more lines per inch your tablet packs, the better the smoothness of those lines. This has nothing to do with the thickness of your lines or the display on your computer.
