To be brave..

in #art3 months ago

Today I wanted to just paint something for myself, without purpouse, without pressure, just something to get into the groove of feeling ok with the process of painting and not being afraid.

This photo (that I thought I took last year or so, but turns out I took it 3 years ago) spoke to me so I thought why not attempt to paint it..

Since I've noticed that one of the main struggles I have recently is with values, I turned the photo into black and white, to give myself a better understanding of where the darkest darks are and the lightest lights.

Even in the colour matching/remembering game - https://dialed.gg/ - I find that I struggle the most with matching the value (how dark or light the colour is), more so than the tone and saturations. Black and white photo allowed me to focuss on value, without distractions. The end result is not precise-precise, but I do believe it helped me alot in the process.

I like how the mossy rocks turned out, not so much the water. I left the water to the very end and so I was running out of daylight to properly understand the subtle nuances in the hue of the water, so I might work on the water some more tomorrow or some other day when the light is back.

Unfortunately I don't have progress photos on this one as I was.. too much in the zone.. to remeber that I might need them. The roughly 3 or 4 hours that it took to paint this flew by in an instant.. Oh, and these are acrylics.. still. Of course.

But for a simple 'I want to not be afraid of panting' exercise, I kind of like how it truned out.

I feel like it's sufficiently whimsical.. ^^

That's pretty neat for hour hours. You are very quick which is a good thing! Having the black and white picture for sure is helpful. I had one for the lake painting too. I printed it out and stuck it on the wall. It really helps to go back and forth between looking at it and the painting.

You are one a great trajectory to develop your artist eyes! Keep it up! Hugs

This was a smaler size 24cmx18cm and I managed to get into a flow state. Technically I should still work on it, at least on the water, if not still fix up some mistakes on the rocks an the top part of the painting that didn't work out at all, but for now I have to let it sit and breathe for a bit. "Art is never finished, only abandoned" as they say..

There's so much fears still though, like, am I just wasting time, am I soo far behind from where I 'should have been', that it is not worth even attempting, are there already too many 'struggling artists' as is and don't need me being added to that pile..? But then I'm thinking.. you know what.. this is how I want to grow old, this is what I want to continue to be doing, even if the life insists on being lived into old age.. and I'm not going to get a batter chance to shift into that than now, so I better fully claim and commit to this.. and hope it eventually turns out to be worth it.

In what way? I think with a couple of adjustments it looks ok.

You are absolutely not wasting time and fuck the should have beens too! Like you said, if you see yourself doing this into old age, this is exactly what you need to do and just do it!

As for "struggling artists", I think that is just one of the ways to discourage someone from making their dreams come true. With all the social media and tech available to us these days and even places where you can get access to all kinds of machines and things for a tiny fee, one is bound to be successful. So instead, focus on developing your skills and shush the noise and voices! You can do it if that is what you wish! I see it!
