Creatures 'n characters, part I: 2007-2008

in #art8 years ago (edited)

This is a series of paintings completely different from my 'Thunderclouds'-series, and it's what I would describe as portraiture of possible lifeforms - close to humans, but with elements of fantasy, insects, mythical monsters and other diverse influences.

I have painted this type of creatures/character since 2007, and there have been changes in the way I paint them, and the colours I've been using, so I'll divide my posts a bit.

In 2007 I became fascinated with gargoyles - the monstruous sculptures on top of churches designed to drain the water from the roof. This is an example

With these photos as primary inspiration, I began making lots of drawings of creatures, in all possible ways. The best -or most inspiring- drawings I then adapted to large canvases, with oil paint.

This is a really quick sketch, but I saw potential in it to make a larger painting from:

The resulting painting, titled "Get That Flashlight Out of My Face!", 60x90cm (24x36inch):

Over the years, all above paintings have been sold. There are more, and a few still available, so let me know in the comments if you like these, then I'll post some more, with their respective stories. Next post (hopefully this afternoon or evening): creature-paintings from 2009-2012!
