Magical Fire

I've been continuing my study of volumes and today I made some magical fire. In 3D things like fire, fog, smoke, and fluids are handled a bit differently than the rest of the geometry that's typically made from polygons. These things are created from something called voxels.

Voxels are sort of like pixels in 2D, but they're 3D. Voxels create a 3D grid and each cube in that grid can hold a variety of parameters. Long story short, it's how you get all your fancy movie CG effects. All the Michael Bay explosions that aren't actual explosions are done with voxels, volumes and fluids.

So tonight I was experimenting with ways of controlling the animation and flow of said voxels and I came up with the above animation. Fun times plus I learned a few things.

The way it's set up each one of those radial planes is pushing out a force which is causing the spinning motion and the sphere at the top is acting like a black hole sucking everything in.

In the end it makes something I thought looked pretty cool. That's about it for tonight, thanks for looking peeps!
