I have been working on some charcoal pet portraits. This order is for two and I am not completely done with this one but I am calling it quits after 13 hours. I am betting that after some time spent on the next piece I will find some new inspiration.
I start off my pieces with a grid most of the time and this time in particular was no different. Using a grid makes it easier to get the right proportions which helps deliver the best results.
My next step is to outline the focal point which is the subject of the portrait in this case the doge. I am using Adobe Illustrator to help with contrasting the colors of my reference since I live with a rare eye disease called deuteranopia.
Then begins the process of sketching in the details one section at a time. I always begin with the face as it is where we look first and determines the success of the piece. The eyes are the most important part of the face and it is said they are like a window to the soul. I pay extra close attention to achieving life like eyes and capturing that window.
The rest of the piece suprised me with a slower production time than I would have liked but I keep pushing forward to produce high quality artworks.
This 8x8 charcoal commission has a finished value of $80 and will be coupled with another pet portrait that is 6x6. This client has ordered five pet portraits from me since I met her and her sons on a fishing trip back in 2016.
