My Favorite Surreal GIF Artists

in #art7 years ago

Dear friends,

today I want to show you some of my favorite GIF-artists. While GIF is just the medium, it attracts many young artists. Maybe it's because of the easy way to share it on the internet. You might notice, that I have a special passion for the surreal kind of GIF-art.

GIF art has been around since the year 1987, increasingly gaining attention from the audience some years after 2000. contemporary art galleries and institutions like the Museum of the Moving Image (New York City) are popular among many young artists.

2. Anna Malina

Anna Malina is a mixed-media artist from Germany, who I just recently discovered. She creates laserprinted animations and turns them into GIFs.

i shot photo sequences and not videos to make stills from, as i wanted it to have the choppiness of stop motion. i scanned each manipulated frame. scanning has some disadvantages and difficulties, but the nice thing about scanning the images is that a fairly good resolution brings out the textures of the materials, which makes me swoon so much (i'm such a sucker for textures i'm sorry). and in the end i used windows movie maker to join all the frames together.

3. Charlie Deck (Big Blue Boo)

Charlie Deck is a NYC based digital artist, who posts a daily gif at his tumblr. His work recently turned into more geometric and pattern based GIFs, which is still fantastic.

Being a director and animator working on music videos (eg. for Bruno Mars and the Roots) the New York-based Jay Sprogell started to create daily GIFs using found images, which he posts on Instagram. You can read an interesting interview about his gif art here.

I like them all - very cool stuff. I never got to make any gifs in the summer-holiday, but I think I will when I get some time.

Glad you're still planning to create some. I'm curious to see what you will come up with. I also got very inspired while doing the research for this post. Lets see, if it GIFs me the ability to create some myself.

Wow these are amazing!

resteemed

Thank you Alan! Much appreciated :-)

Sehr cool. Resteemed :-)

Ach was! Für Steemit ist das ja sogar ganz praktisch ;-)

Dains are my favorite. Thanks for introducing me to this. It is so simple but stereographic effect makes it magical. Need to google how to make it and play with this idea. Its awsome

Yeah! Let me know, when you find a tutorial on how to do these.

It can be made in a 3d-program by making a z-depth map and then simply take the UV for both the drawing and the z-depth map onto a plane from the camera. Then rotate it a little in both directions.

Thank you! When you're able to explain it in two sentences, it cannot be that hard. Maybe there is even a video-tutorial around or you're able to create one in the future. That would be amazing!

The thing is to make a depth map where white is the nearest and black is farthest away.

Like this:

Not that difficult with the ball-pen drawings.

Allright. I will try to convert photos of my designer toys as an experiment. Would be cool way to present them in 2d to look like 3d

@shortcut awesome artwork! Thanks to @lichtblick for resteeming it. Resteem too cause it's damn cool!!!!! Steem on

Thanks to both of you :-) Your resteems are much appreciated.

it was like 3D experience with naked eyes wow :D

Yes, the 3D effect is really cool! I love the contrast between the hand-drawn analog look and this top-notch 3d technique.

Some of these are sooooo cool especially love the last three by jay!

Thanks for your feedback! I wished some of these artists would join Steemit ;-)

They probably will not many ppl know about it, I've invited quite a lot of freelance creatives I know I just think takes time for word to get around :)

That's cool! Steemit needs some performance and usabilty improvements to reach a broader adoption, imho. But it's only a matter of time :-)

yeah I agree 2018 couldbe really differnt for this platform it's good to be an early adopter i feel. :)

I have to find out how Dain Fagerholm i doing this 3d illusion of his drawings. _

Yess, me too!

Thanks for letting me know.

Those are incredible. Gifs can be so creative and entertaining I never knew it.

Indeed, there is a growing community of artists using this medium in a very creative way.

Every gif is nice
