Coming from a photo background I'd say that you are probably better off sticking with lenses between 35 and 50 mm for reference photos, otherwise you'll have foreshortening issues if you try to 1:1 a painting.

Thank you for the suggestion! I didn't even think about that, although I was aware of the distortions from the side when you use a wide angle lens. I did use a 18-55mm tho I forgot which focal length I used, probably about 20+.
But yeah my photo references are only for poses, human anatomy, ang lighting and I'm not strict about the proportions at all. I do love it when I distort some parts a little bit cos I like it more on the expressive side. I'll make sure to keep that in mind if I'm planning to do 1:1 tho I don't think I'll be doing that soon yet. :D
