Thanks, glad you like it :-)

I can ABSOLUTLEY feel this little kids excitement. The open mouth and angle of the eyes expresses this. Again, another awesome piece. The reflection on the lips, nose and eyes was the perfect touch. My favorite part of the piece is the way you painted those eyes. There appears to be just a subtle squint to them that makes all the difference (In my opinion). Second favorite are those highlights around the lips.

Thanks again :-) Yes, she was excited when mummy told her, that uncle Bill was going to paint her portrait. Unfortunately, mummy delivered a very poor, underexposed, blurry photo that made it hard to distinguish between skin and shadow. I did a lot of guessing about the actual values, but it worked out after some lightening with semi-opaque white ink (eyes, teeth) and pan pastels (skin) after the fact. My pain is clearly visible in the step photos, where the poor kid almost turned into a member of the walking dead :-)

AGAIN .. Funny as heck. You are killing me with funny over here. Thanks for the laugh. 😆

I have been using oil paint over watercolor recently.. maybe I should break out the pastels and give them a whirl. That may be some fun.

We aim to please. Everybody is a comic don't you know?

Yes, try pastel over watercolor. Prime the paper with Liquitex Clear Gesso (my post a few weeks ago) to add plenty of tooth. It will take watercolor no problem, although some wet-in-wet techniqes are limited as paper absorbency goes down with priming. You can colorize the gesso with watercolor as well - transparent acrylics with tooth.

You can furthermore use the Liquitex as a liquid blending medium for pastels, too. Thin with some water and add a few drops of glycerin to improve flow. Thus liquid blending turns your pastel pigments into instant acrylics while maintaining perfect tooth. Also works on watercolor pencils.

Experimenting - it's fun.

Nice portrait! I looks very realistic, which I know is quite hard to do generally.

Thank you. Yeah, it's a reasonable likeness. Mummy was happy :-)
