It is extremely useful, for plein-air painting, too. You can just pick a feature of the landscape and sight it over the outstretched arm. The back and forth motion of the body doesn't matter much at that scale. It can also be used in the studio for painting from life, as long as you fix the position of your head, e.g. with a string hanging from the ceiling touching your forehead for every sighting. It's not just a copy tool, it trains the eye. I love it.
