Hello dear Steemians! Today, I would like to share a tutorial on how to paint a fall leaf. The medium I used is coloured pencils and I did not use any solvent to blend the colours as I dry blended them directly.
Tools and Materials
- A good quality artblock that can take layers of colours
- A pencil to draw
- Colour pencils (I used Staedler Luna)
- A sharpener
Step by Step Tutorial

This is the drawing of the fall leaf that I was going to paint.

I began to paint with the colour white. I painted it at the edges of the midrib and some of the veins as well to give it a lifted look later on. Then, I used the layering technique to paint some yellow on some parts of the leaf. It is totally up to you on how you would like your leaf to be because fall leaves come in different warm colours with no particular fixed pattern. The layering technique is done by softly colouring on the area you want to colour. Hold the pencil as far as you can from the tip and colour with low pressure. Also, it is best to keep your pencils sharp for a smooth layering.

This is how I held my pencil most of the time. Note how I am holding it closer to the edge and not the tip. Colouring with maximum pressure the first time itself will end up with an uneven colouring and you won't be able to make changes if you want to later on as the colour has already occupied that area of the paper.

I added some orange colour for a little shading.

I coloured some red as well to deepen certain parts of the orange shadows. Then, I added some light green on a few areas.

I painted a midrib and some veins using a dark brown and a reddish brown. I used two types of brown to add some shape to the part so that it won't look flat.

This is the stage where I started using the burnishing technique with yellow. Hold your pencil closer to the tip compared to earlier and colour with high pressure. Beware not to use too much of pressure though as you don't want to end up tearing the paper or poking holes (LOL :D).

I repeated the burnishing technique with the colour orange.

I added some red using the same technique. Then, I softly coloured some green on some areas without burnishing because I wanted it to be light.

I added some veins on the leaf.

I wanted to take the painting to the next level. So, I added some shadows in purple and grey at the edges of the leaf. I added them in such a way so that the leaf looks lifted on the sides while lying flat on the middle. I also added more red in a few parts like at the edges of the second part of the right area of the leaf. This is the finished painting. Thank you for reading my post and I hope that it is helpful. Have a great day/evening ahead ♥

I remember the time when we were learning how to paint them at school. But what we would do would be bring a nice leaf and get the form out of it so it would be easier. However I suck at it anyway :D
You on the other hand are very good! I like the colors, shading and it simply looks like a nice leaf :)
Thank you for sharing and have a lovely Thursday!
Thank you! Your comment made me reminisce my school days too :) Hehee, I'm sure your artwork would have looked cute :) We had easier art lessons where all we had to do was to just paint the leaves and stamp them on the paper 🍁

Well, cute would be the right word. If I would be 7 :D Now it would be considered just ugly :D
Hehe you are not alone. I have such artworks too where they didn't turn out the way I wanted them to be :D
