Had to temporarily close my Etsy store (Way too many orders)
I'm a silversmith. I make wedding bands. My rings sell for $100 or $200 each. Last week, with 50+ order on my clipboard I just hand to put the store in vacation mode. https://www.etsy.com/shop/PaulZozem
So far, I've helped quite a few people get started on Etsy. Jeff said to me, "I'm on Etsy, but I never get any orders."
I told him, well... you just don't know how to push your items to the top of the Search Engine. It's pretty simply. Just renew your most popular items ever day. Sure, each 20 cent post will last for 90 days, BUT if you renew a for sale item every day... THEN it is pushed to the top of the Etsy Search engine and you'll make sales. It didn't take long. Soon he was selling over 3k a month.
Another friend of mine, Mike, never made a ring in his life. It took me a whole month to get him up and running, but he sold over 100k his first year. The thing is, you do need to have some basic computer skills. You've got to be able to take good pictures and write well enough to include an engaging description.
But here's the number one secret that guarantees success...
Here's how I got Mike to hit the ground running, making good sales right off the bat.
It's all in the research. Before you even decide what to sell you need to do some very serious research. An hour a day, for a week or two, should do the trick. As you browse through the Etsy site, you've going to see a lot of things you yourself could make. Good. That's a start. BUT... don't bother unless you know there is a BIG demand for those items. That's where most people fail. The go to all the trouble of making something and setting up a shop, only to find there is no demand.
On the other hand, if you take the time to find where the demand is and make those items, you are almost assured success. Here's how it works. The most amazing thing about Etsy is they openly list all sales for each vendor. For instance you can see on my site, I've made 1927 sales. https://www.etsy.com/shop/PaulZozem
Here's the secret: Real numbers on where all the money is being spent.
With that Sales figure the top of each Sellers store, you know exactly how many sales they making. You just need to visit that store once a week, and keep a log. It's not that difficult. It doesn't take that much time. It's just about being smart. Find something that you could do. Then using the Sales numbers, prominently posted at the top of every store, figure out where the demand is. Looking at all the items in any one store, come up with an average price. Multiple that by the number of sales per week, and you'll know almost exactly what they earning and what you can expect to earn.
Once you find someone who is making lots of sales every week, simply model your store after theirs. Don't worry that you'll be copying their designs. Whatever your craft is, your designs will always be some variation of your own vision and skills. Though, you should be confident that you could offer similar items for less or better items for more.
SO... IF YOU CAN FIND someone who is making lots of sales every day... and every week... AND you could do something similar, you are almost guaranteed to also make LOTS of sales every day, right off the bat. That is... IF YOU RENEW your items every day. That's all there is to it. At 20 cents a pop, for each renewal, you're looking at maybe $1 a day in advertising costs. In which case, you should see results within a week.
If there's any interest in this strategy, I can post further instructions on how to use Etsy's Favorites and Chrome Extensions to VERY easily track who's making the most money.
