Art Talk: Chihuly at Taliesin West

in #arttalk2 years ago

Chihuly in the Desert (a 6.5 month exhibition) recently ended. I did a post A walk through Chihuly in the Desert Exhibition at Desert Botanical Garden which highlighted all the pieces in the Desert Botanical Garden.

Now, I want to show you the pieces that were at Taliesin West at the same time. Taliesin West was the home, studio and school of Frank Lloyd Wright. It was so wonderful to see two of my favorite artist together!

Chihuly is also a big fan of Wright and said in an AZ Central interview that it was a "a dream come true" to have an exhibition at Taliesin West.

I went twice. Once with my friend Sandra. She knows me so well. It was my birthday present. One of the best I can remember for a long time. And with my friend Sara. She came out from Ohio and we visited both the Desert Botanical Barden and Taliesin West.

Taliesen West is really fantastic and in the future I will do a tour of it. For now we will look at the Chihuly that was on exhibition.

Alabaster and Amber Spire Tower

This is a great piece that is close to the entrance, similar to Desert Towers at the Garden.

Red Reeds and Niijima Floats

There were also red reed at the Desert Botanical Garden. It was interesting to see the same piece set up differently and in different environments. That is why I am so enamored with Chihuly, you have a different experience every time you see it.

Red Reeds at the Desert Botanical Garden
Red Reeds at Taliesin West

Throughout the water and on the grass at the base of the red reeds you will see the Niijima Floats. Niijima is a small Island in Tokyo Bay, Japan. Both Chihuly and Frank Lloyd Wright were heavily influenced by Japan and it's people and art.

Here are a couple of pictures of some of the Japanese art throughout Taliesin West.

While the Red Reeds were similar there were plenty of original pieces at Taliesin. Including this next piece. It was the first time I had seen it.

Black Saguaros and Scarlet Icicles

Saguaros, how fitting when Taliesin West is surrounded by acres and acres of desert landscape.

This is the view you see when you are standing close to the Black Saguaros and looking out to the landscape.

Golden Celadon Baskets

Oh my, these are gorgeous. I don't often see baskets on exhibit. It was very appropriate to have baskets showing at a show in Arizona as they are inspired by Native American arts.

The baskets are set in the Garden Room. One of my favorite places at Taliesin West. I was sitting on the yellow chair as I the picture of the baskets on the table.

If you want to see how the baskets are made here is a video with the process.

Fire Amber Herons

Fire Amber Herons are similar to the Desert Fiori and Blue Birch Reeds and Scorpion Tails. The color is quite fantastic. I wanted to take pictures of it from every angle.

Citron Tower

Like many of the other pieces there is a similar piece at the Desert Botanical Garden. The one at the Desert Botanical Garden is Lime and Lava Red Tower The pieces he choose fit so well for the environment.

Being a Chihuly Groupie I don't know if I could have dreamed of anything better than having Chihuly at both the Desert Botanical Garden and Taliesin for 6 and half months. It was wonderful!

YAY thanks @choogirl That is great!

Hi @sjarvie5, I live in a country with a tropical rain climate, I have never seen a desert before. The Desert Exhibition looks great. The plants there look special.

Hi Do Do it has been really wonderful to live in the desert and get to see all these unique plants. I hope you will be able to visit the desert one day.

Wow, one could spend hours watching the pieces of art under the sun, watching how different lighting affects each piece at different times of the day bringing them to life.

Brilliant photography, awesome outing, a very special time spent with a friend.

Hi @wittyzell I agree, the Fire Amber Herons are awesome. The house is a piece of art too. It would be wonderful to spend all day there!

Oooo spiky. These ones are really cool. I especially like the Spire Towers. They look very organic and very much like they belong in the desert setting.

Hi @leaky20 there were lots of spiky in this exhibit. I guess he was channeling his spiky for the desert!

Haha well there are a lot of cacti in the desert so it works very well.
