The 10 most famous paintings in the world - Number 4: The Scream

in #artzone6 years ago

Is the title of four paintings by Norwegian artist Edvard Munch. The most famous version is in the National Gallery of Norway and was completed in 1893; two other versions of the painting are in the Munch Museum, also in Oslo, while the fourth version belongs to a private collection. This work was considered at the time to be insane and degenerate art. His thefts in 1994 and 2004 gave him a little publicity. However, the fame comes from his appearance on the cover of Times magazine.

All the versions of the painting show an androgynous figure in the foreground, symbolizing a modern man in a moment of deep anguish and existential despair. The landscape in the background is Oslo as seen from the hill of Ekeberg. El Grito is considered one of the most important works of the artist and the expressionist movement, as it is an image of a cultural icon, similar to that of the Gioconda, by Leonardo Da Vinci.
