It turned out to be too large for an asteroid, but too small to be called a planet, and was later found to exhibit behavior typical of a comet. Since he showed duality with all his appearance and behavior, it was decided to name him in honor of the centaur Chiron. Which had the body of a man to the waist, and below the body of a horse, which also personifies duality.
