Mercury in Capricorn - December 28th 2019

Mercury enters the sign of Capricorn at 11:55pm on December 28th, which would normally be good news for them as the typically sharp-minded Mercury gets lost in the library during their time in Sagittarius, and Capricorn represents a welcome bit of relief. Currently Capricorn is pretty crowded territory however, playing host to Saturn, Pluto, the South Node of the Moon (who is trying to suck all the air out of the room) and Jupiter (who's doing a relatively decent job of putting it back in) as well as the Sun.

Mercury in Capricorn is typically a time of bringing the mental alertness and attention to detail of Mercury to the long-term goal-oriented planning that is Capricorn's nature. Capricorn, the goat, wants a mountain to climb, a peak to work toward. Mercury in Capricorn seeks to understand the route to get there. It's a common placement for skeptics - "If I can't understand it using cold hard rational reality, it can't be real." Capricorn is often bleak, forbidding territory, particularly for the past few years, a desolate place for the intellectual functions to try and find joy.

But not impossible. Jupiter's presence in Capricorn is making it a bit easier, a jokester at this Irish Wake. And Mercury will make an easy, flowing connection with electric, innovative Uranus on December 30th, making Sunday and Monday days where the coffee is liable to hit like red bull and the ideas liable to flow too fast to keep up with. Mercury moves to make a close connection with Jupiter on January 2nd - here we find the forest merging with the trees, the big idea and the local specifics connecting in full integration. It's pleasant but all a bit more draining than it should be, so watch out for that. It's especially draining on January 3rd, when Mercury dives into the pit of the South Node, so don't hurt yourself thinking too hard around that time. Forreal.

This transit will affect you most if your Sun, Moon, or Ascendant is in Gemini or Virgo, or closely aspecting Mercury in your natal chart.

Mercury will remain in Capricorn until January 16th, when he leaves the cold earth of Capricorn for the hot air of Aquarius.

Mars in Sagittarius - January 3rd 2020

Mars has been in Scorpio since November 19th, which is a long time for the lord of bloodshed and anger to be feeling especially powerful, as he does in Scorpio, a sign he has rulership over. Mars is a malefic - a planet that makes things happen which we find unpleasant. When a malefic is in a sign it rules, particularly Mars, that mayhem gets done a bit more efficiently, and hopefully a bit more constructively, although not always.

Mars leaves the dark waters of Scorpio for the open fields and immense libraries of Sagittarius on January 3rd 2020, and the aggressive impulse, the will the anger, the lust for living gets turned from being of single-minded purpose to being more interested in The Meaning of It All. Mars in Sagittarius needs to have a philosophical or lofty reason to express anger. Mars in Sagittarius fights For something when it fights - God, Meaning, Reason, The Law, whatever floats your hope. Mars in Sagittarius needs freedom to move most of all. Sagittarius, the Centaur, is half-horse, and horses need lots of space to move around in. Mars is that inner push forward, and in Sagittarius he feels the push to make a change, to see new places, to explore new ideas. Mars in Sagittarius gets restless when fenced in, and acts out when he's feeling like there's nowhere to go.

So take this time to figure out what ideals are worth fighting for, and which battles speak to your inner spirit.

This transit will affect you most if your Sun, Moon, or Ascendant is in Aries or Scorpio, or closely aspecting Mars in your natal chart.

Mars will be in Sagittarius until February 16th, at which point the open fields of the archer's sign make way for the steep mountains of Capricorn.
