Look at the Sky .. Perseids Meteor Showers Peak !

in #astronomy6 years ago (edited)

Every year, we are witnesses of the beautiful Perseids meteor shower. As it's a summer in the northern hemisphere, it is common for us to be outside & be spectators of this wonderful cosmic dance. It plays from July 17 to August 24th.

I remember them from a very young age where we would be driving through county Kerry (a very western part of Ireland, out in the middle of the Atlantic) & it would be raining a glistening display. It was as if stars were falling into the fields. Liquid light that would not set fire but rather send enlightenment to the earth (possibly, haha, that's my fairy theory anyways).

Perseids meteor shower take their name from the greek god Perseus who slayed the Medusa.

The real reason for is that the meteor shower appears to be coming from the Perseus constellation that resides in the northern hemisphere.

Technically according to NASA, we are passing through the debris & dust of the comet Swift/Tuttle. The comet is the largest object known to repeatedly pass the earth with a 16km nucleus. It was last seen pass the earth in 1992 & it will pass again 2126 yet every year we are tantalised by its star dust.

Best seen from the northern hemisphere, It can also be seen from the northern part of the southern hemisphere.

It will reach its peak on August 11th -12th - 13th.

With a New Moon on Saturday 11th, it will set before the Perseids meteor shower that is best seen at & after midnight with Saturn visible until 2am, Mars until 4am, Jupiter & Venus can be seen until 11.30 pm.

Yet I gave some info in this post, I reckon it is all very subjective, best to just go out & experience it for yourself

I remember also going out in the nights of August in our garden with my father looking for shooting stars :).
The sky wasn't so clear as with yours but it were beautiful happy times nonetheless.
Will look out for them tonight!
Maybe some more steemians catch up to it then tomorrow night :D.

Thanks @miela for the resteem ! I hope you see many shooting stars. enjoy ! :)
