Inside the Abandoned Henryton State Hospital

In rural southeastern Carroll County (in the United States), you could find this hospital that was instituted in the early 1920s and established as a facility to treat black patients suffering from tuberculosis. It was one of the first hospitals in Maryland that were built to provide black Americans with the same level of treatment as white Americans. Secondarily, it was used for the instruction and treatment of mentally ill adults.

The hospital shut its doors in 1985. Since then, more than 80 fires took place in the abandoned building, as it fell victim to deterioration and vandalism. Especially with the increased tourism / day trippers sneaking around. The hospital is not there anymore today, as it was demolished in 2013. I've visited the complex just a year before, in 2012, with a friend who lives close by and was absolutely fascinated by the structure. And boy, this turned me into an enthousiast as well. Hereby a photo series.

The Haunted House?

Oh... and there are many stories of people who've experienced horrifying suspense with all sorts of paranormal activity. I suggest you to read the stories widely spread on the internet to catch a glimpse of how the place really felt like... A true haunted house.

Wow outstanding. ..what paintings these would make ...

Wow I like your antique pictures! May I use maybe some of the details in your photos in my artworks in the future?

What you done ,? Lovely picture truly art photography.thank you for sharing.

The hallway picture looks very creepy even in broad daylight. It looks like a scene from the "Supernaturals" series. 😱 Thanks for sharing these.

Nice post, success is always for you friend

wow....a perfect place for filming :)

Epic shots. I love how I can feel the energy of the spaces...

I've always loved urban exploring but I've never done much myself. Here in Alaska we don't have many building lying around abandoned. It would be cool to see shots from the place before it was deserted and compare them. That would be a cool project. Thanks for sharing!

So interesting - the history of the place - and you've captured it beautifully. I especially love the photo with the brick with hints of green outside and the cracked window.

Your photos' colors and beauty don't seem to be haunted at all. I would love to hear a story or two about this hospital. Haunted stories always fascinate me. 😊

wow nice shots? which camra did you use ?

Beauty! What device took the pictures.

Looks indeed hunted..... Too bad that was once known to be an hospital

Once known is a understatement. who really knows?

I think this abandoned hospital become the hideout of anyone who's hiding in the community.. its my opinion but i am not sure!

not just courage, it takes a long time to photograph a lot of things that have been forgotten in the hospital. I guess you spend a lot of time photographing it. nice shot

Really cool share! Really bold for going there, I would expect to catch like ten different diseases there. 😂😂@martinphoto

I was hospitalized once, for my mental problems, but the place was right next to a abandoned asylum, and I for sure was experiencing some intense paranormal phenomena while I was there. Frightening doesn't begin to describe. After about 6 years, I went online and found several videos documenting voices out of nowhere, other relics of disturbing nature from this very place. Thank you for sharing your photos, the graffiti is redeeming to an otherwise sterile and suspicious place, in my opinion. Hope my comment is deserving of your Upvote. Your post is almost inspiring to share the experience I had with my haunted mental hospital. Time will tell.

Horrible place!

Stunning pictures... Amazing place... Thank you.

This is very amazing, I love how you became aesthetic the decay with your pics!

What's wrong with that? Early American Wreckage is one of my favorite decorative motifs. Nothing there a little WD-40, duct tape, spray paint and a good broom and dust pan can't fix.

Seriously though, that's some serious photography. Reminds me --for some reason I can't quite fathom-- (pun intended) of the wreckage of the HMS Titanic.

Well done !

I'm just a newb, so I don't know if I can resteem yet, but I can upvote and follow!

Yeah! My resteem took. First one I've ever done.

Also, btw...good to be following a fellow Martin...

Wow!! Amazing shots! I cant believe it used to be a hospital once! Id want to go visit sich a site:) it looks like its a great place to shoot a scary movie😄🤗 or one with zombies (as im into 'the walking Dead' season now😄 thanks for sharing @martinphoto!

good filming spot for scary movies :)

This is a dilapitated and abandoned hospital, by the look of its destruction its been abandoned for years but what baffles me about these pictures is how you were able to make something this old and damaged look interesting to view and appealing. Great job Sir this is true photography taking lemon and making a lemonade out of it.

This is very amazing, I love how you became aesthetic the decay with your pics!

Wow! Photos are all good and I like the way you called it "Forgotten America". You have an artist in you that's for sure. Keep it up!

this is pretty cool I'm glad you have been rewarded so handsomely in such a short time for this because especially with the place having been torn down.

I can feel sadness, despair and madness in each of the images. You are excellent with your camera, congratulations!!!

Both a fascination of mine and a terrifying thought to be imprisoned in a place like this. How helpless one must feel knowing there is no escaping or how long this will be your home. It gives me the creeps and makes me want to look deeper into each corner just to make sure no one still lives there. Great photo shoot. 🐓🐓

An eerie Haunted Hospital! Seems interesting. Great pictures too!

It's beautiful, I'm fond of old or abandoned houses or places. Thanks for the share
