Auto/down/selfvotes

in #auto6 months ago

I decided not to make a video about this as some have mentioned my youtube journey started with a lot of dramatic/negative hive stuff that may not be great for any outsiders to watch - which I agree with. So I thought I'd make a quick post saying a few things.

One of the only people I ended up having to downvote as they ignored my warnings of shamelessly buying votes, automating "community posts" which they accepted all the rewards on themselves, and a myriad of other things that defeat the purpose of curation and community-building, they decided to undelegate all the various vote-selling/trading/self-voting services and start retaliating on my projects.

Normally if people deem my projects to be overrewarded and their downvotes seem to be genuine, I accept their opinion and action and try not to be negative about their decision to lower the rewards, but when some do it straight out of retaliation then I don't think I should accept it. Since I don't self-vote, this means I have an extra vote "free" for such scenarios where if certain posts get downvoted I will just counter the downvote. So that's what I've been doing lately, you may see my upvotes on my own account, @poshtoken, @azircon, @ocd and @ocdb lately until the abuser gets bored and stops.

Something to keep in mind here is that due to my upvotes often being cast late, at the 2-6 day age of a post, this usually will mean I will earn close to no curation rewards on these votes - they're strictly to counter the downvote of the abuser. Many of my own posts even forfeit most of the author rewards so voting those up late is kind of just a lose-lose for me but it doesn't penalize other voters who voted them early just because someone decided to downvote them out of retaliation.

Here's a screenshot from hivestats showing that I'm not really profiting off of self-voting in this case, it's more about the principle of things.

On another note, the autovoters that clang to @redditposh's comments lately in attempt to maximize their curation, quickly stopped autovoting them recently as we started to downvote some that were getting overrewarded which meant the maximizers weren't so much maximizing any longer. It's a shame that there seems to be a lot of accounts trailing such maximizers however, even our rank #1 witness doing so...

Oh well, it's still early days I suppose, it's on you how you decide to run things here and if you want to see the later stages of hive in a good standing with the community or have a crappy reputation and hide away to a new account.

Thanks for reading, I'll be self-voting for a little while here forward, hope ya'll don't mind. ^^

Good news the trail stopped on redditposh, they gave up before I expected!

Funny tough, he doesn't power down? Or just waiting delegation cancels... Just keep that account to downvote you wouldn't be from someone normal

I appreciate your transparency on explaining the self vote, not everyone would have

I guess there is no harm in you self voting to the max, the effort you put in. I have never self voted, not worth it with my HP tbh. and as they say "self praise is no recommendation" lol

Yeah just doing it now for a while to counter the "bad downvotes", if people deemed my content overrewarded without ulterior motives I wouldn't mind it, but this clearly comes from a retaliation standpoint because I downvoted him and his community account for ill-gained votes from vote buying and other schemes.

I'm hoping it stops eventually so I can go back focusing on voting people in my feeds, etc, but not the end of the world if he doesn't. Something I expected people who behave like that to downvotes to eventually end up doing.

yes indeed it sounds like it is getting silly, some folk need to grow up accept there mistakes and move on. 💪💪💪

I don't mind at all, I think you're on the right path for a better tomorrow for Hive.
I'm in support of you!

Wait, so trailing is also considered bad behavior on HIVE? But I've seen so many trails over the years that I thought it was normal.

No it's not really, unless the person everyone is trailing starts abusing it by voting on stuff that shouldn't get voted on or downvoting things that shouldn't get downvoted on.

A lot of this is coming of as strange..newbie vibes I guess. A lot to learn. Sorry you have to go through all that drama

I really need to learn so many things here in HIVE!

muting this as it takes a bit too space

I have never had a problem with self voting on posts, I just think it's weird when people upvote their own comments. That being said, I might feel differently if my vote was worth like 50 bucks or something.

self voting is fine but some don't like it...

Self-votng used to be a default option for posts on the old chain, but I think that set a bad precedent.

If you vote for your own posts, that's one less vote you can give to someone else to support their work. It's one less chance to build the community and the relationships which boost outside voters finding you.

If you vote for yourself, you are deciding you are owed a portion of the reward pool. That sense of entitlement is selfish.

mmm so it is ok to vote for yourself as long as you can justify it....hive is an odd place

Outside of countering malicious downvotes in a vote war, what justifies it to you?

more interesting than anything of how Hive works or doesn't work
