Its name is Kutaraja. Literally, it means the city of kings. This city was ever being the center of Aceh Darussalam Emperior. All high-tech, monetary, economic and craft activities were born from skilled hands of its residents.
Eventhough, Kutaraja used to be a center for the activities of blacksmiths, armaments, gold and jewelry. All that happened hundreds of centuries ago when Kutaraja was at the top of its glory as one of the five largest Islamic Kingdoms in the world.
Now Kutaraja has been renamed to be Banda Aceh. Its location is also very strategic. Located on the west tip of the island of Sumatra, this old city was confirmed as the capital city of Aceh province. According to the history of Banda Aceh as the capital city of the Aceh Darussalam Sultanate, it stood in the 14th century with the first king was Sultan Ali Mughayat Syah bin Sultan Syamsu Syah bin Sultan Munawaar Shah.
That means Banda Aceh has been aged about 812 years old, a long journey across the ages. In the course of its journey, Banda Aceh also witnessed the history of Indonesian political dynamics. Starting from the colonial era, the DI / TII armed rebellion, the rebellion of the Free Aceh Movement (GAM), until tsunami disaster that took thousands of Acehnese people's lives in 2004. Those are dark incidents should not happen again.
On the other hand, experience as an old city, Banda Aceh is also known as a tolerant and religious city. The relationship between the minority population and its predominantly moslem citizens is very harmonious until now. They can live side by side and appreciate each other. Just like an old church of the Sacred Heart (Hati Kudus) which stood during the Dutch colonial era are located near Baiturrahman Grand Mosque became a symbol of harmony and friendship between moslem and christian.
Now Banda Aceh is under the leadership of Mayor Aminulah Usman that continues to develop Banda Aceh to be smart city. A city that upholds the values of modern civilization and humanist.[*]

Selayang Pandang Jejak Sejarah Banda Aceh, Si Kota Tua yang Toleran dan Religius
Namanya Kutaraja. Atau secara harfiah berarti kota para raja. Di kota inilah dulunya Kerajaan Aceh Darussalam berpusat. Segala aktivitas perdagangan, moneter, ekonomi dan kerajinan bernilai seni tinggi lahir dari tangan para penduduknya yang terampil.
Bahkan Kutaraja dulunya pernah menjadi pusat kegiatan pandai besi, persenjataan, emas dan perhiasan. Semua itu terjadi beratus abad silam ketika Kutaraja berada di puncak kejayaaannya sebagai satu dari lima Kerajaan Islam terbesar di dunia.
Sekarang Kutaraja sudah berganti nama menjadi Banda Aceh. Letaknya juga sangat strategis. Bertengger di ujung Pulau Sumatera, kota tua ini ditabalkan sebagai ibu kota Provinsi Aceh. Menurut sejarahnya Banda Aceh sebagai ibu kota Kesultanan Aceh Darussalam berdiri pada abad ke-14 dengan raja pertamanya Sultan Ali Mughayat Syah bin Sultan Syamsu Syah bin Sultan Munawaar Syah.
Itu artinya Banda Aceh sudah berusia sekitar 812 tahun. Sebuah perjalanan panjang lintas zaman. Dalam rentetan perjalanannya, Banda Aceh juga menjadi saksi sejarah dinamika perpolitikan Indonesia. Mulai dari fase zaman penjajahan kolonial, konflik pemberontakan bersenjata DI/TII, pemberontakan Gerakan Aceh Merdeka (GAM), hingga bencana tsunami yang merenggut ribuan nyawa rakyat Aceh pada tahun 2004. Semua itu adalah peristiwa kelam yang tidak boleh terulang lagi.
Di sisi yang lain, pengalaman sebagai kota tua, Banda Aceh juga dikenal sebagai kota toleran dan religius. Hubungan antara penduduk minoritas dan warganya yang mayoritas beragama Islam sangat harmonis. Mereka bisa hidup saling berdampingan dan menghargai satu sama lain. Bahkan sebuah gereja tua Hati Kudus, yang berdiri pada masa kolonial Belanda di sekitar Masjid Raya Baiturrahman menjadi simbol kerukunan dan persahabatan antara umat muslim dan kristen.
Sekarang Banda Aceh di bawah kepemimpinan Wali Kota Aminulah Usman terus berkembang menuju smart city. Sebuah kota yang menjunjung tinggi nilai-nilai peradaban modern dan humanis. [*]
