How To Shoot... A Basketball

in #basketball6 years ago

I. Intro :
Ok let me break down what i am about to do for you guys… I AM ABOUT TO TELL YOU ALL THE SECRETS (MY GEMS!) ON HOW TO shoot a basketball efficiently (Now i’m not saying this style fits everybody but it works for me)

Thesis Statement- how i look at shooting a basketball is just like the idea of shooting a gun. First you load up your weapon, then you cock back, and finally you shoot with confidence KNOWING that you will hit your target every time... With years of practice of course, I have become a bullseye so let’s pay attention closely.

II. Body:

  1. Load- All great shooters will tell you that 80% of having a complete jump shot comes from the legs. Players like Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Kyrie Irving, and James Harden all understand this because statistically they are all the best shooters. First and foremost let’s start with your feet, you should always be on the balls of your feet when you are preparing to shoot (i call this your launching pad). The reason for this when you begin to load up you are getting ready to slightly explode out of 90 degree squat (sort of). With the hand you are shooting with, slightly tilt your whole body in that direction (left or right) towards the basket. When exploding think of yourself as a slinky going up and coming straight back down. You want to be able to land gracefully, absorbing the impact of the jump. If your jump shot is short its usually because you did not load your legs (fatigue/being lazy)
    TRANSITION- Once you get this part down you can then move into…
    2. Cocking Back (The Semi-Automatic) - Now this part has to be the most consistent part of your shooting form. Also this is the point where most people’s forms differ based on their own personal comfortability. No matter what fits you, you have to be able to repeat the same movement over and over and over again, no matter how tired you get. (First off your hands should be in shooting form anytime the ball is not in your hands on offense. If you are not prepared to shoot the ball (indicating your hands are down) someone like me will not pass it to you. Now let me show you my style of shooting and why it works for me. In order to get the best results, everything from your shoulder all the way down to your fingertips should all be in a 90 degree angle. Shoulder-Elbow-Wrist-Knuckle-Fingers. I'm not saying it's going to be in perfect form every time but practicing what's comfortable for you will help you a lot more than trying to copy someone else step by step.
    TRANSITION*- NOW FINALLY...
    3. We fire away- now here is another place you should be consistent but there are certain situations where you might have to which up your movements. The release is all about following through. There are three main ways to release your jump shot but I’m only going to show you mines. l call it the split finger release; where you place the gap of your index and middle finger dead center of the ball. As you are releasing the ball you want those to fingers to be the last ones touching the ball. And once they are removed from the ball they should be facing the ground with the other fingers slightly bent. (Don't be greedy). Be confident you will make the shot! If you can envision you making the shot then it will go in after a little bit of practice of course.

III. Conclusion:
Summary- Now let's go back through all our steps:
Lock and load the legs and get ready to explode
Hands up ready to shoot/ Everything in 90n degrees
And release with index and middle finger facing the ground
confidence
This can work for anybody;
Trying to teach kids, torching your friends at the park, or just learning to understand the game of basketball when watching a High School, College or NBA game. Thank you for listening it's been a pleasure.
