When I was a kid my father dug a pit bar-b-que next to our summer cabin. We use to cook whole hogs over it. Now, I prefer my electric Char-broil smoker. It's a lot less maintenance and doesn't involve a shovel. But, no matter how you bbq/smoke if you are happy with the results I believe you're doing it right.
