Dear Hive people my name is Linco, I'm from Bangladesh. Recently I worked on Exhibition as an assistant of Stephen Truax Eckerd who is the curator of that exhibition at Dakshina Chitra Living Museum is situated in Chennai, India. There I met with a wonderful artist named Rajan Sanachhen. Today I will share his life story that how he become an artist.

Rajan Sangachhen

The passion for art developed in him when he learns to draw an elephant with his elder brother. It was the time when he was in grade one. His brother & his friends joined the art class at that period and there was inside feeling that if he could have gone with them, but he couldn’t. He never demands anything from his parents. Rather Rajan continued my academic study. After a while, he started learning drawing from his brother and his brother's friends. One of his brother's friends was a fantastic artist of wood curving. Those were the people inspire him in the art for the first time. Whenever he got a chance, he drew from the science book as a reference book where he can find varieties of drawings of plants & animals. And they were the reference book that he used to advance his art. Later he drew from various types of comics books. That helps him a lot with understanding the drawing techniques.

After finishing his SLC he joined the Thapathali Engineering campus to study architecture. At that period Rajan & his brother opened a small teashop just to support his family for our education. Then a friend of his brother shows up with his hand made tattoo machine and asks him to do the tattoo on him because he had seen his drawing on the wall of their shop. But his arm is already full of tattoos and still wants Rajan to do the tattoo on his arm. And it was his first turning point to be an artist. Tattooing helps him a lot in maintaining his pocket money and help him to buy engineering materials for his college.

Exhibition in Germany

Later after completing the course of engineering, he got a job and also, he joined a fine art course at the same time. In the morning he went to college after that he went to his office for his job and worked till 10 pm. It went for a year. He passed the certificate level exam in fine art, but he couldn’t pass on engineering. In 2014 he was selected to go to Germany for technical trains for a new project for his office and his employees knew that he had some paintings and asked him to bring his paintings to Germany so that he can help him to sell them. That was wonderful when his employ showed his paintings one of his colleagues in Germany he was surprised, and he planned to exhibit his painting at his office. And it became his first international solo exhibition. He found himself overwhelmed to see the love & respect for an artist and he decided to study hard on art, and he rejoined traditional art training.

Then he started his paubha painting journey. But he tried to do the job and paubha painting side by side but he figured out that part-time involvement in paupha is a waste of time and so he resigns from his job in 2016 and fully involved in traditional paupha painting. He always wants to learn new things in art by experimenting with new techniques. Some wonderful pictures of his paintings are given below.

I asked him why art is so important to him. He told me that he found art as meditation and inspiration for my life. Whenever I get depressed art always helps me to overcome that stress, art for peace.
