The Vulturine Guineafowl is the largest bird species and adapts very well to live in the arid regions of Africa, can survive for a long time without water and get all the necessary fluids from its food. The name "Guineafowl" indicates that this species originated in the Gulf of Guinea. These birds reach a size of 46-62 cm with a tail length of 28-32 cm. They are the most spectacular Guineafowl species with bright cobalt blue feathers, mixed with purple, black and white. The bird has got its name because of the neck and head, which is reminiscent of vultures. They inhabit deserts in half of the desert in Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya, and Uganda and Tanzania. Vulturine Guineafowls is a social bird that mostly lives in large groups. They can live in dry, dense plains where water is scarce, while vegetation consists mostly of acacia bushes. When the environment gets too dry, these birds move into the forest, where they share the area with other Guineafowl species. Like most land-dwelling birds, they prefer to walk rather than fly and even when in danger, almost always depend on their muscular feet to take them to safety. However, that does not mean they can fly - in extreme cases they can fly up to 500 meters. At night, they fly to bed, which is usually in a tree surrounded by thick bushes.
At dawn, Vulturine Guineafowls left their rest area and went to the dining area. Until noon, a group of 20-30 birds search for bushes and soil for vegetation. When heat becomes extreme, they rest in thick bushes. After a few hours, they continued to eat on seeds, grass, sprouts, roots, and sometimes insects, spiders, scorpions, and snails. Vulturine Guineafowls can almost live without fresh water sources, get the water they need from plants and animals they eat, and morning dew.
